about the site
This site was the brainchild of my frustration, as a university student studying Hindi, with the lack of resources on the web for non-fluent fans of popular Hindi cinema. I didn't just want song lyrics; I wanted translations. When I couldn't find them, I decided to translate the songs myself -- and learn HTML so I could share my work with the virtual community. Thus BollyWHAT? was born, and my heretofore "literary Hindi" suddenly expanded to encompass an unbelievable number of synonyms for "insane," "beloved," and "beautiful."
Since BollyWHAT?'s founding in 2000, the site has grown considerably. It has been mentioned as a top resource for fans of popular Hindi cinema in several print publications, including the Film Society of Lincoln Center's May/June 2002 issue of Film Comment, Midday, India West and Richard Corliss's column in Time Magazine. Nevertheless, the most rewarding feedback I receive is from visitors to the site, including native Hindi speakers who have graciously sent tips about some of the questioned lines in my translations. I hope you, too, find this site a helpful guide for your exploration of the film industry fondly known as "Bollywood."
