"Few know but I have also learnt the art of make-up and how to style your hair. I often cut my hair myself. I have been interested in it since childhood."

Daughter of 70s superstar, the "dream girl" Hema Malini, Esha Deol sent the entire country's expectations soaring with her debut film, Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe. Though an out-and-out flop, Bollywood's unshakeable nepotism assures it will be far from her last attempt at acting.

One of her best friends, Kareena Kapoor, has been singing her praises for two years now. While Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe sank like a stone, Kareena need not worry.  Already Esha has a stellar line up, which will see her starring across from box office heavies like Hrithik Roshan and Fardeen Khan.

Esha is not a native Hindi speaker, and has been faulted by regional media for her inability to understand the language in which she wants to act.  But Esha is working hard to prepare herself for the rigors of her chosen career.  "This is an ongoing process. I've joined Nimit Kishore Kapoor's Acting Lab which is really good. I've gone through the entire process of acting; from expression to dialogue delivery. Then there is this very nice lady called Rina Mehta who comes for my Hindi diction because my Hindi wasn't that great. She helps me with Urdu pronunciations and nukhtas. Every morning at 8.00, I sit with her for one hour." (Rediff, May 2000)

She is also an accomplished classical dancer, having having studied intensively in the southern form called Odissi. She has also performed with her mother, a world-famous proponent of Bharatnatyam, to immense critical praise. She confesses, "At the moment, I find this Hindi jhatak-matak a little difficult. That's why, everyday, I practise for at least three hours. I hope I'll be able to adjust to that also." (Rediff, May 2000) So does everyone, Esha, seeing as you'll be starring in some of the biggest films of the next two years!
